"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Library News, T.Y. Songbooks, Poetry Competition, Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, First Year Concert

11th February 2013

Library News

On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome Mrs. Ria Drohan of St.Mary’s Church of Ireland to our school to show her the new books which had been bought for the library with funds raised during last year’s South East Storytelling Festival. We were delighted at that time that the ladies of St. Mary’s offered us the opportunity to participate in their Charity tearooms. Our T.Y. students also held story telling sessions for students of local Primary schools.

On Tuesday, Ria got to see all the new books purchased for the library and was very impressed by the Art work displayed around the school as well as the magnificent songbooks produced by the T.Y. students which were on display in the library. We look forward to further collaboration during next autumn’s festival. We are also obliged to the students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd year who have donated books to the Library. The Cairde girls are supervising there at lunchtimes and it’s encouraging to see so many enthusiastic readers.

Included are first and second year students as well as those who have presented books to the library.

T.Y. Songbooks

Every year, as part of their English studies, T.Y. students are asked to create a “songbook” where they create images to accompany the lyrics of their chosen song. This is to help them in their studies of poetry as they visualise the images. Every year the work is superb and this year was no exception and Art teacher Mrs. Foley with English teacher Mrs. E Power found it extremely difficult to pick the winning books. Indeed, eventually four students from one class and five from the other were awarded prizes.

St.Valentine’s Poetry Competition

Valentine's Day Poetry Display

This year the St. Valentine’s Day poetry competition was revived by Ms. Helen Cotter and our wonderful S.N.A. Mrs. Maris Curran as part of our ongoing Literacy Initiative. This iniative is to enable students to broaden and improve their literacy skills of reading and writing while enjoying the wonders of different genres of literature.

Mrs. Curran set up a very attractive table in the Library, displaying the works of some of our renowned poets as well as some fun poems the girls may not have read before. The girls were encouraged to write in English, Irish, or even French or German if they so wished and Mrs. Curran and Ms. Cotter were delighted with the excellent response which included one entry in Polish!

The entries were judged by former staff member, Bean de Paor and the winners were announced on Thursday, February 7th as, and of course we will be on midterm break for St. Valentine’s Day.

Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

On Friday, the school community, students, teachers, Mercy sisters,B.O.M. and parents gathered in the Friary church as Fr. John Harris celebrated mass to honour our patron saint, Our Lady of Lourdes.

Both Fr. Harris and Principal Mrs. Hughes thanked religion teachers Ms. Cotter and Ms. O’Shea and music teacher Mrs. Lucey for the preparation of the service. The musicians and singers were wonderful as were all those who participated.

Readers; Emma Casey, Coady Power, Taylor Murray, Aisling Tobin, Clara Mannion, Niamh Whyte, Abigail McGuire. Nadine Browne, Kathi Sereda and Courtney Taylor.

Celene Cummins spoke the commentary as Alix Fitzgerald, Niamh McComb and Isabel Wade brought gifts to the altar while the Communion reflection was spoken by Aisling Curran and Shannon Kelly-Fitzgerald.

Amazing Grace was sung by the 3rd and 5th year music students while musicians from all years, including Eavanna on flute performed superbly. Soloists Jill, Layla, Grace, Dervla, Maggie and Ellen sang beautifully as did the choir. It was indeed a wonderful occasion for all the school to come together and our thanks to Fr. Harris for leading us in celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

First Year Concert

At the Cairde Girls Talent Concert

Last Monday, first year students took part in a concert organised by the Cairde girls. Everyone was impressed by the talent shown on the day. From singing to dancing, the participation was outstanding. All proceeds raised went to support the Lourdes fund and the day was immensely enjoyed by all.
