"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Open Night, Remembrance Mass, Football Success, Cross Country, “Egypt” Day, Bingo

26th November 2012

Open Night

On Thursday night we welcomed a very large group of Primary school students to view the  Ard Scoil. Thank you to Mrs. Valerie Coughlan who organised the night with the help of many staff members but a very special thank you must go to the students who gave up their time to come in and help out on the  night, they are the ambassadors “par excellence” of the school. The Cairde girls helped to greet visitors and act as guides while many girls, especially the first years who were here as visitors last year, helped to demonstrate their skills in computers, art, science, speech and drama and sport. The girls also welcomed visitors to the language lab and the peaceful prayer room and the superb musicians entertained us in different corners of the school.

Of  course ,as usual, we must thank our very busy  Parents’ Council who again laid out a wonderful array of cakes and teas at the end of the evening.

November - Remembrance Mass

During the month of November, the month of “the Holy Souls”, religion classes had remembrance ceremonies and this culminated with a Mass celebrated by Fr. John Harris, our new chaplain for the |Junior students.  On Monday, Fr. John celebrated mass in memory of all our loved ones who have passed away. It was a very special occasion and  a first in the Junior Hall. It brought the whole school community together, students, teaching and non teaching staff. Mrs. Colette Power, Deputy Principal, formally welcomed Fr. Harris and thanked him for bringing the celebration of the Eucharist to the school and helping us to remember our dead colleagues, friends and family members.

Sports - Football Success

Well done to both our Junior and Senior football teams who have qualified for the Munster quarter finals; the Juniors progressed this week following a comprehensive defeat of Cashel.

First Year Cross Country

Mrs. Ashe recently held her annual cross country competition for first year students. There was great excitement as teams from 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 competed for team and individual honours.

At the start, a group of about six lead the way but by half way  Shauna Coakley had taken up the running and came home a clear winner. She was trailed all the way by Kate Whelan of  1.2 with Aoife Browne finishing strongly to take third place.

  • 1.3 took team prize with 1.2 second and 1.1 in third place.

  • Teams; First..Shauna Coakley 1st; Aoife Brownw 3rd; Orla Healy 4th; AISLING Naumann 5th; Emma Gildea 8th; Evanna Mansfield 17th and Eimear Hayes 18th.

  • Second; Kate Whelan 2nd; Niamh McComb 6th; Eileen Fitzgerald9th; Michaela Hickey 11th; Shannon Barry-Ferncombe 12th; Abigail McGuire 14th and Lydia Troy 15th.

  • Third. Amy Prendergast 7th; Chloe Yellop10th; Niamh Reddy 16th; Hannah Lonergan 19th and Jenny Supple 20th.

Cross Country Outing

Some of the cross country runners got a chance test their prowess during the week when they travelled with students from the C.B.S. and Colaiste  Cathal Naofa to Blackwater  Community  School for some friendly races. It was the usual cross country weather but this didn’t stop the girls enjoying their trip and help in preparations for upcoming events.

First Year “Egypt” Day

First year classes,1.1 and 1.3 marked concluding the Egyptian section of their  history course by creating various projects to mark what they had learned about this fascinating ancient civilisation. We has pyramids and mummies, dolls dressed Egyptian style, masks, sarcophagus, three D maps, even a play. They demonstrated their knowledge of hieroglyphics with articles on the gods or farming for example and made samples of papyrus. It was a very entertaining way to revise the section and I look forward to seeing what the Celts will look like!

Bingo

A reminder of Monday night bingo in the Ard Scoil, beginning at 8.15. Come and join the fun......and bring a friend!
