"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Orienteering, Golf and Taekwando Awards, Romeo and Juliet

15th October 2012

Orienteering

On the 11th of November the T.Y year group headed to the R.S.C in Waterford City to compete in a training day for Orienteering. The girls left the school at 11:10 accompanied by Mrs. Pickering and Mrs. Foley. When we arrived at the R.S.C we were guided to the white seats in the stand where we sat and waited for further instructions.

To do the course each person had to have a partner. We all lined up in our pairs and received a map and an orienteering symbol which we wore around our finger and used at each checkpoint to show that we had visited each place. After each pair had collected their map and symbol we were then all led through a field and across to the starting point.

At the starting point each pair had to clear their symbol from the group that had used it before them and then check to make sure that it had been cleared. Each pair then lined up one behind the other and was instructed on which way to go before entering their symbol into the start checkpoint.

Throughout the course each pair had to climb up hills and steps and also climb down hills and steps, there was also some flat surface around. Coming down the hills was nearly even harder than going up hills and quite a lot of girls managed to slip down rather then walk down.

Most pairs managed to complete the course in less than 60 minutes but others took a little longer than that. Overall we had a great day out and are looking forward to the Munster competition and the All-Ireland competition which will be held next February.

Congratulations to the winning pairs, Stella Queally and Jessica Meere and  Catherine Bowen with Janine Krummenacher.

Congratulations

Congratulations to T.Y. student Stella Queally who won the title Golfer of the Year at the Gold Coast Golf Club.  Stella won the President’s prize but couldn’t accept first prize as she is a juvenile member but was awarded second prize instead. Stella also came second in an All Ireland under 19 competition  in Wicklow recently. Obviously this young golfer has far to go!

Well done also to first year student Abigail McGuire who reached the semi finals of the World Taekwando Championships in Brighton. As Abigail was competing against older girls  this was a superb achievement and I’m sure we will hear of further success for her in the future.

Romeo and Juliet

As our third year pupils are studying Romeo and Juliet as part of  their English course they travelled to Cork on Friday with their English teachers to see CorcaDorca’s production of Shakespeare’s tale of “ star crossed lovers”.

The group left school at 11.00 to travel to Cork for the performance at 2.00. All had brought packed lunches but with time to spare, we made a stop at Mahon Point where some availed of the time to go to the numerous cafes while others took a quick window shopping tour! Having entered the shopping centre under blue skies, imagine our horror on arriving at the doors to find torrential rain pouring down!! Cries of utter dismay were heard from those who had spent so long on their hair-dos that morning but there was nothing for it but to dash to the busses!

We arrived in plenty of time to take our places and to take in the magnificent set. This production is set in modern dress but faithfully follows the words of the Bard and hopefully will assist the students in their understanding and appreciation of this well loved story. It will be interesting to read the girls’ review of the production.
