"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Cross Country Qualifiers, Oireachtas Visit, Irish Heart Foundation Speaker, 'Pre' Exams Begin

20th February 2012

Munster Schools’ Cross Country.

Kate McGrath and Hannah Power Qualify for the All Ireland Championships

On Thursday, February 9th, Mrs Ashe and her athletes travelled to Cork to compete in the Munster Schools’ Cross Country Championships. The standard was very high and although the course was muddy, it was a good track.

First year students Kate McGrath and Hannah Power qualified for the All Ireland championships as did second year Cliona Ryan who came 7th in her race. Her team maters Laura Cusack, Grace Heffernan and Ornaith Keane were unlucky not to qualify as they took fourth team place. We wish them all good luck in the All Ireland.

“Don’t be Country Cousins!”

All roads lead to Dublin for Ard Scoil 3rd year students on Wednesday, February 8th.

We left for Dublin for our Junior Cert. C.S.P.E. Action Project at 8a.m. and arrived in Dublin at 11.a.m. |We were first warned by Ms. Neylin not to be “country cousins”, whatever that means!

When we got off the bus, we went to Leinster House and sat into a heated debate in the Dail where we watched Enda Kenny speaking with other T.D.s about the order of business. We then listened to a debate in the Seanad as the senators discussed the Health Bill for 2012. Everyone was fascinated by the beautiful ceiling in the Seanad which used to be a ballroom.

After this, Paudie Coffey T.D. talked to us in the AV room and told us about the goings on of everyday life in Leinster House.

When we left Leinster House, we went to the National Museum where we saw bog bodies, Celtic skeleton remains and the Ardagh Chalice along with ancient Egyptian mummies. We spent an hour or so in the museum and found it very interesting.

Following an hour’s shopping, we returned to the bus for the journey home. The atmosphere on the bus on our return journey was brilliant. We sang songs, using the bus microphone, and entertained each other by singing along.
We would like to thank Ms. O’Shea, Ms. Neylin and Bean de Paor for making this day possible.

Amber Earley, Amy Lonergan,Emilie Martin, Clodagh Kearns and Aisling Hallinan.

Irish Heart Foundation.

The T.Y.s recently had a visit from Tracy Power of the Irish Heart Foundation who spoke to them about healthy living. She was very impressed by the Intensive First Aid module which the girls have been studying and for which they are now doing exams.

School Feast Day Mass.

On Friday, February 10th, we marked our school’s feast day with a Mass in honour of our Lady of Lourdes, celebrated by Fr. Flor O’Callaghan.

Following the Entrance Hymn and Opening Prayer, words of welcome were spoken by Aoife Murphy. Aisling Hayes and Emma Casey spoke the readings and after the Gospel Aoife Murphy and Chloe Keane told us the story of Bernadette. Layla Quarry sang “Where are you bound Mary” very beautifully.

The Prayers of the Faithful were read by Dawn Drummey, Elaine Drohan, Lorraine Whelan, Laura Sheehan, Eileen Ryan and Taylor Murray. Jenny Hurley gave the commentary as Dervla, Paulina and Alana brought the gifts to the altar.
The Communion Reflection, Prayer to Our Lady, was read by Abigail de Souza.

In her address, Principal Mrs Hughes thanked Fr. Flor and the religion teachers Ms.O’Shea, Ms. Cotter and Mrs. Lucey and their helpers for their preparation of the Mass. She also thanked Mrs.Lucey whose musicians and singers were outstanding as usual, making this a wonderful and inspiring occasion for the entire school community

Back to School.

We’re back to school this week as the 3rd and 6th years start their “Pre” exams. Good luck girls. We look forward to hearing stories of the thrills and spills of the Skiing trip and hopefully will have an account of this next week with some photos.
