Comhairle na nOg

Back row: Jennifer, Shauna and Kaylee. Front row: Andrea and Sophie

On Friday, October 14th, the students had a free day due to a staff meeting. However, five students from the Ard Scoil  Students Council, Sophie Allen, Andrea Foley, Shauna Fernecombe, Kaylee Norris and Jennifer Meehan, attended Comhairle na nOg in Clonea Strand Hotel. Comhairle na nOg is the County youth council for teenagers. They discuss issues that affect young people in County Waterford.

We arrived to a lovely breakfast. Soon we watched a presentation on the previous achievements of Comhairle na nOg. We then did team bonding exercises where we got to know people. After a delicious lunch, we divided into groups and focused on two main topics that are relevant to teenagers today - Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

Following an interesting discussion, we nominated two people to go forward to Dail na nOg in Dublin. We would like to congratulate Shauna Ferncombe who was elected in the first count; also Adam Houlihan, a fourth year student from the C.B.S. They will join four previous members in Croke Park for Dail na nOg on November 18th. They will have the opportunity to discuss the main topics with Government Ministers and other influential leaders of society. We wish Shauna the very best of luck.

Poetry Aloud

The students who competed in Poetry Aloud, Ciara, Aoife, Emma, Chloe, Jessica, Dearbhla, Aisling ,Hannah and Shauna.

On Friday last nine Ard Scoil students left the Ard Scoil at 8.15 to travel to the Ursuline Convent in Waterford to compete in “Poetry Aloud”, an event which is organised by the National Library to coincide with an exhibition of W.B. Yeats’ work. We arrived 10 minutes early for registration; however the competition didn’t start until 10.00.  Each student had to speak a Yeats poem and in the second round they could choose a poem from 3 selected anthologies. Our group of nine and a similarly sized group from Meanscoil San Nioclas found themselves vastly outnumbered by the sea of red Ursuline jumpers!

Three Ard Scoil students competed in the Junior section;Aisling Curran,2nd year and first years Hannah Power and Shauna Young. Six T.Y. students competed in the Intermediate section;Chloe Keane, Ciara Gildea,Emma Casey, Jessica O’Brien, Aoife Murphy and Dearbhla Whelan.

The first readings of the two Yeats poems took a very long time and the girls performed very well despite constant interruptions from the corridors outside and the rooms above. I must say having heard so many renditions of “The Sally Gardens” leaves me with a fervent wish not to hear it again for a very long time!

After a fifteen minute break, we returned to the hall for the second phase of the competition which was a little more varied as girls could chose which poem to recite. Our pupils had picked a very interesting selection of poems and really did them justice. I must compliment the three young men from Ring who were not a bit fazed by all the girls and performed very well indeed; I liked their choice of poems too. Finally at 2.00, as the last girl had recited, we left for “29 minutes exactly!” to allow the adjudicators decide who would go forward to the next round.

Everyone returned on time but unfortunately we didn’t receive the judgement until after 3.00. I must commend the girls for their exemplary behaviour throughout the very long day. Congratulations to Aisling Curran who was selected to go through to the next round which will take place in the National Library in Dublin.
