"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Art Exhibition at Ard Scoil, TY's Manual Handling Training

17th October 2011

Art Exhibition

It has been a tradition of the Ard Scoil to display the superb art and craftwork of our Art students throughout the school. This summer, as the school corridors received a fresh coat of paint, the paintings were taken down.  Principal, Mrs. Dorothy Hughes, decided to mark the rehanging of the paintings with an exhibition so that not only the staff and students of the Ard Scoil could view and enjoy the wonderful array of talent.

Our caretaker, the indefatigable Mr. John Morgan, has been very busy these past weeks hanging the paintings and posing the craftwork in the stairwells and corridors... no mean feat. The result is a stunning variety of art work by past and present pupils, displaying many different themes and styles.

The exhibition, on Wednesday October 26th, at 7.00p.m., will be opened by artist Sinead O’Hehir, a past pupil of the school. The guest speaker is Joan Clancy, a valued member of the Ard Scoil staff as well as being the owner of a gallery well known in Art circles. The viewing on Wednesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m, is open to the public and is held in aid of the West Waterford Hospice.

The exhibition is also open on Thursday, October 27th from 9 a.m. to 3p.m. when schools have also been invited to bring their students to see the paintings and craftwork.

Of course we must pay tribute to our excellent art teacher, Mrs. Mary Foley, for her inspiration and guidance of her students. Many of her past pupils are now working in a wide spectrum of the art world.

We look forward to sharing this magnificent and exciting art work with the community.

T.Y.s Manual Handling Day

Last Wednesday, October 12th, Liam Moore came to visit the Ard Scoil Transition Year students for a day of instruction on manual handling. We participated in preparation for work experience which is coming up in November.

Mr. Moore gave a talk about safety in the workplace as well as some hands-on instructions on how to correctly use a fire extinguisher. He also taught us how to lift correctly and we all had a go at lifting boxes to show we could do it properly.

After our early lunch break we headed back to take the all important exam! A fail in this would have prevented us from doing our work experience but, thanks to Liam’s brilliant teaching, we all passed with flying colours!

On behalf of all the T.Y. students, I would like to thank Liam Moore for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come in and speak to us.

Chloe Keane.
