"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Drumming Workshop & Cairde Girl Training

Newsletter 20th March 2011

Drumming Workshop.

On Tuesday,15th of march, the first and second years took part in a drumming workshop in the Ard Scoil’s junior hall. Klaus returned yet again to teach us a mixture of rhythms.

After a majority of us found out we had no rhythm when we were taught a song using only our hands, we went on to play a song by the great Bob Marley, which we thought pretty good!!! We played the song on tuned sticks which produced a note when hit.  T he rest of the class was spent playing tambourines and African drums.

Everybody left the hall in a great mood and a fantastic time was had by all, even if our ears were left ringing afterwards.

Cairde Girl Training.

Last Tuesday, March 15th, we travelled to Cork to attend a training day to become Cairde Girls for the next school year. We were joined by a group from a school in Clonmel. Wewere taught how to play different types of games; some we already knew but we learned some new ones too. First we played a game called “Fruit Salad” which woke us all up! Then we all got a page with a blank clock on it and had to ask people if they were free  at different times. If they were, we wrote down each other’s  names at that certain time.

Throughout the day,we would meet up with a person who was free at a particular time and talk about our favourite film or something we were passionate about. This helped us to communicate and make friends with the students from the other school.

In between games we talked about leadership and communication. Then we had lunch and got to make tea or coffee if we wanted. For our final task we were divided into three groups in three different rooms. We were given straws and pins and told to build something “tall, self supporting and beautiful”. We had about five minutes to do this before we all met up in the main room again and did a “drop” test to see if our structures were indeed self supporting! This ended the session on a very good note before we travelled home, happy that we had learned the skills we’ll need next year when we take on the role of Cairde girls in September.

The Cairde girls are a very important group in the Ard Scoil, senior students who not only help the first year students but or on hand to help at many school events. Thank you to all the girls who give their free time to help and to their mentor Ms. Anne Gleeson.
