"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Bulgaria - February 2010

On Friday 12th February 2010, a busload of extremely excited teenage girls departed Árd Scoil na nDéise, bound for Bulgaria. To ease us into the journey, Ms O’Donovan produced a copy of Mamma Mia to get us into the holiday spirit. The hours flew by and before we knew it we were being settled into our hotel in Belfast for the night, with warnings of an early start in the morning. Time seemed to speed up as the night flew and we found ourselves, at 6am, heading for the airport. The rest of our journey flew past.

Our bus climbed the mountains with the inches of snow getting higher and higher in the ditches along the road. When we finally reached Pamporovo, we were all glued to the windows. There was snow everywhere and not in short supply, long icicles hanging from the rooftops and snow capped trees!
Early mornings would become something of a formality as we traipsed down to breakfast at 8am the next morning.

We were rigged out in our snow gear and on the slopes for 9.30am. It was then we were divided into our groups and given our amazing ski instructors. We hit it off with our ski instructor straight away and before we knew it, we were flying down slopes and even speaking the odd word of Bulgarian. After about 2 days we were off the beginner’s slope and were having no trouble skiing down the green slopes. The slopes went from green – blue – red – black in difficulty, with the black being for the most experienced. By the end of the week we had tackled the red slopes, not a bother to us. The brave Mr. O’Keefe tried his hand on the black slope. The feeling, the rush, the adrenaline you get from skiing down the steep slopes and jumps at full speed is indescribable.

In the evenings, we came home, had dinner and went to a different activity which the teacher’s had organised for us. These included a disco, crazy bowling, ice-skating and a personal favourite of Mrs. O’Donovan’s, the ringos – a must try. The routine of getting up, having breakfast, hitting the slopes, coming home and having dinner soon became second nature to us. For some of us, the perfect ending to the night came with a chat with the teachers about the day on the slopes. A bundle of laughs was always guaranteed. After 5 fun packed days our last trip down the slopes had to come.

For a first-time skier, I think it is safe to say a ski trip is not your average “lounge around at the pool” type of holiday. It’s your “up at half 7 and a full day’s activity” type of holiday. Was it worth it? Absolutely! Not only did this skiing trip give us confidence, teach us new skills and test our taste buds… it allowed us to make friends, grow closer to the ones we already had and it gave us a whole new experience.

It was a holiday of a lifetime for us all, one we will never forget. So we would like to thank the teachers that brought us, for their time and generosity.
