Hockey News

On Monday our first year hockey team didn’t have far to travel as they played Ballincollig at St. Augustinian’s pitch.  In the opening minutes the Ard Scoil girls threatened the Ballincollig goal until ten minutes in Lauren McGregor scored from a short corner passed by Stella Queally.  Great team work from Orla, Stella and Lauren to get the ball up to the forwards provided lots of scoring opportunities but the score remained one nil at half time.

Backs and forwards working together led to Catherine scoring a goal in the first minute of the second half, followed later by a rocket from Lauren to finish with a 3 – 0 scoreline and a good win for the girls.

On Thursday the Minor B and Junior B teams travelled to Cobh to play the local teams.  These were frustrating games, with each ending in a nil all draw.

Cáirde Girls Training

On Tuesday, next years Cáirde girls travelled to Cork for a training day to prepare them to take up their duties next September.  These girls give up their free time to help with many school events and, importantly, to help ease new first year students transition into secondary school.

Trocaire

This week has seen many of our students take part in Trocaire fasts.  Some decided on a sponsored silence for the day, which proved quite difficult for some of our garrulous pupils!  The T.Y. students helped Miss Cotter with organising this and made soup for those who fasted – more news on this next week plus an account of how much they collected for this worthy cause.

Squashy Couch Programme

All second years will start this adolescent health and information project this week.  This is run in partnership by the H.S.E. and the Crisis Pregnancy Agency.

“The underlying assumption of the approach adopted by Squashy Couch is that engaging with young people through interesting activities, and delivering workshops and information using specialist trained staff, in a language and attitude which is normalised and non-judgemental, enables young people to assimilate, understand and respect the value of the information.  It is believed that not only can this influence early sexual behaviour and activity but that it actually does.” – Frank Murtagh, Squashy Couch Adolescent Health and Information Project-Evaluation September 2005.
