Pink Day 2009

Students "in the pink"

Mrs. Vera O’Brien’s 2nd year C.S.P.E. class organised a series of events during September and October to raise funds for the Irish Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. They held cake sales, making delicious pink cake and bags of sweets; they made jewellery and held a raffle. It culminated in a special “Pink Day” in the school when they were helped by T.Y. students to organise a fun filled day.

On October 23rd, all pupils brought in €2, with the 2nd and 1st years contributing a further euro each to take part in table quizzes organised by the T.Y.s Everyone wore something pink with their uniform and it was a very colourful display indeed with socks, headbands, wigs etc. in all shades of pink. Apart from the quizzes, the 1st and 2nd years also enjoyed a concert and a disco. They wish to thank the various local businesses which supplied spot prizes, all the students and staff who supported their efforts and of course Mrs O’Brien who helped them in their endeavours which netted the magnificent sum of €1.200! Well done girls!

Mrs Vera O'Brien & Organisers of Pink Day

Congratulations.

Congratulations to T.Y. students Eileen O’Brien and Ciara Scanlan who recently received award from W.I.T in recognition of their excellent Junior Cert. results in Business studies. Well done to the girls and their teacher Ms.Anne Gleeson.

T.Y. News.

As the T.Y. head off for two weeks’ work experience, it is time to catch up on their news. One group have just finished their First Aid course and now begin to learn self defence with the very popular Billy O’ Sullivan.

Many are hoping to earn their Bronze Gaisce medal and are busy completing tasks for this.

They travelled to Waterford this week to take part in the Well Girl programme and later on will organise a Well Girl day in school.

As well as helping the 2nd years organise Pink Day, they also ran cake sales of their own, raising €400 for the West Waterford Hospice. They are working on their projects for enterprise, art and languages and so much more….it’s hard to keep up with them.

We would like to thank all the employers in Dungarvan who are giving them this opportunity to experience the world of work.

Table Quiz.

Don’t forget to organise your team for the Parents’ Council Table Quiz in Minnie’s this Thursday. For only €10 per table you will help to raise necessary funds for the school while having a very enjoyable night out. We’ll see you for the 8.30 start.

Health and Safety Awareness
by Catherine Power

On Friday, Ocober 16th, the T.Y.s had a Health and Safety Awareness Day to help us prepare for work experience. Liam Moore lead us through various procedures necessary for a safe working environment.

We started by watching videos of accidents that have happened to people in the workplace; they were a bit gory!

Then we watched a power point of proper manual handling procedures and everyone had the opportunity to move a plastic box correctly. After this we learned about fire safety and went outside to light fires and learn how to extinguish them with the corect extinguishers. This attracted the attention of the staff and other students!

In the afternoon we watched some more videos and learned about drug awareness and the proper use of chemicals. Then we had our exam which everyone had to pass to be allowed to go on work experience.

Overall it was an extremely interesting day and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.
